Dr. Mazalan Kamis is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Institute Darul Ridzuan (IDR), a public policy think tank for the state government of Perak, tasked to conduct research and explore issues pertinent to the state. Previously, he was CEO of Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia, an organisation under the purview of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), that aims to promote and inculcate innovation among Malaysians.
He received his PhD in Extension Education specialising in Transformative Learning from University Putra Malaysia and in addition he also holds a M. Ed in Instructional Leadership from University of Houston as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the University of Queensland, Australia.
Previously, he has served for IDR as COO where he was instrumental in introducing and driving various initiatives to increase innovative capacities of individuals, communities and organisations in Perak.
Prior to joining IDR, he worked as a development policy specialist in a think-tank group at the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), under the Prime Minister’s Department. At EPU, he was a core member of a group responsible in formulating the Strategic Direction for socio-economic development in Malaysia as well as providing input to several National development plans including the Tenth Malaysia Plan. He has had a three-year working stint in the United States of America prior to joining EPU, where he worked as a Transnational Project Manager for Cornell University.
Dr Mazalan Kamis is an expert on strategy, innovation, creativity and social development. He has been active in advocating for Value Innovation and Blue Ocean Strategy (BOS) for over half a decade. He underwent a one-year intensive practical training in BOS in 2007 under the tutelage of a global facilitator for the creators of the method. Dr. Mazalan has gained recognition as a thought-leader on the transformative perspective of Breaking Boundaries for successful growth strategies.
He has a vast interest in innovation and strategic planning and has conducted numerous workshops and talks related to the subject. An engaging presenter, he drives towards provoking his audiences to deconstruct their mental boundaries that can hinder their personal as well as organisational and business growth. Dr.Mazalan has delivered keynote addresses at public and in-house conferences and management retreats, conducted training workshops and seminars, and facilitated many public and private sectors organisations to formulate innovative strategies for growth.
Dr. Mazalan is also very active in spending his free time to engage in social work through voluntary activities. He is a co-founder, board member and life-time volunteer of the Cancer Network (KanWork), a one of its kind non-governmental organisation providing support system to cancer patients. While in the US, he served for two years as the President of the Aceh Relief Fund (ARF), an NGO founded and incorporated in the State of New York to deliver tsunami-related assistance to Aceh. He also currently serves as an International Advisor to the Aceh Institute in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.
